#HBD to American Founding Father and third President of the US, Thomas Jefferson, #bornonthisday in 1743. Here his likeness graces a French porcelain vase. During the early 19th century, French porcelain manufacturers recognized, in the growing and affluent population of the United States, a serious market for their wares, and a significant quantity of porcelain in the Empire/Restauration taste, now known generically as "Old Paris" porcelain, was exported to the United States. Following an international fashion for ornamenting porcelain with portraits of national heroes, various French porcelain manufacturers produced a variety of ornamental vases with portraits of American presidents and other national heroes, such as this example. “'Old Paris' Vase with a Portrait of Thomas Jefferson," about 1828–30 French Porcelain, partially painted and gilded, with iron tie-rod 14 in. high, 7 1/2 in. wide, 5 1/8 in. deep Inscribed (below the portrait): THOMAS JEFFERSON #thomasjefferson #uspresidents #foundingfathers #frenchporcelain #empiretaste #restaurationtaste #oldparisporcelain #oldparisporcelainvase #decarts #decorativearts #decorativeartsandhistory

TBThursday! There was a time when I would create fabulous lamp shades with an atelier in Paris to go with the objects I made into lamps. Many loved the details and extra touch and did not complain about the price. Today, this is no longer the case and this shade is considered too fussy and too expensive. I still have the Old Paris vase made into a lamp however, the shade is stored....no longer for sale. How styles and trends change for the public. @mhmcantq #maryhelenmccoy #maryhelenmccoyfineantiques #maryhelenmccoyinteriors #memphis #tbt #thescoutguidememphis #thescoutguide #tsgmemphis #antiquedealer #antiquesandinteriors #antiquedealersofinstagram #lighting #lamps #lampshade #lampshadedesign #oldparisporcelain #blackandwhitesilk #blackandwhitestripes #pleats
