I grew up being the only boy in all of Arya Dance Academy to learn Kathak. I loved doing it and performing at shows so much. But having people laugh and make fun of it when I'd tell them I did Kathak as a guy or having some family members constantly against it, I became afraid of performing over time and was made to quit and stop after 5-6 years of learning. For years after, I hid the fact that I trained in Kathak. When I joined BSB, I had quietly mentioned to my captain I knew "some Kathak", and was asked to incorporate some counts in the routine. Others on the team later asked me to teach them a little bit because they thought it was so cool, and throughout my years on the team, I became a lot more confident and rediscovered my love for dance, performance, and Kathak. Now when I see my first full-fledged Kathak piece since childhood, done on one of my own songs, being shared on an international platform like Bollyshake, and having it literally trend on social media, it's an incredible feeling I can't really explain.
