Music + theatre programs throughout my public school education shaped me- so did the teachers who opened my eyes, heart, and mind.
One of the most influential teachers in my life was @derek_fawcett (a musician and humanitarian). I'll never forget when he showed me how to scat for the first time or let me sing "Change Gon Come" when other teacher made us sing classical music. He taught me about self discovery through music. And he taught me about gratitude and contribution by watching him live his life with such intention and compassion.
My music/art teachers and classes encouraged me to dig dipper, to try harder, to go after 'impossible dreams' and to make thoughtful choices. Most importantly, they created a community of students they taught to go into the world and be great, but also to DO great things for others. I didn't learn any of those things in math, science, or even English class.
The arts aren't just a stress relief, a hobby, a place for students to go. Arts education shapes a person, a community, a society- one we are all a part of.
