Had the total pleasure today of visiting Peace By Chocolate - a family business run by a family of Syrian Refugees in Antigonish, NS!
If you haven't heard the Hadhad family's story yet, it's incredible. Assam Hadhad was a successful chocolatier in Damascus for over 20 years when his factory and shop were destroyed by bombing in the war. He and his family fled Syria and, after living in refugee camps, eventually ended up in Antigonish amongst the wave of 25,000 refugees that came to Canada last year. In their new home, the Hadhads decided to give chocolate another go.
The Antigonish community rallied, and volunteers built them a small chocolate factory in a shed next to their home. They started selling their chocolates at the local farmers market and by special order. Support poured in, and now they also have a shop and have had to start selling online to meet demand. They also donated a generous amount of their profits to relief efforts for the Fort McMurray wildfires.
Oh, and Justin Trudeau sang their praises at the UN a couple of months ago.
Totally heartwarming and inspirational, and totally happy to support this great local family business 😊
